Stanza: Amorphoscapes

Stanza is a prolific UK-based artist working with net art, generative “audiovisual paintings” (his own description) and soundtoys (like soundscraper). Most of his work is done in Director. His Amorphoscapes site contains a multitude of semi-interactive pieces.

Interestingly, because Director has a number of blend modes not available in Flash or most other tools, the tool itself leaves a recognizable footprint in the work via the use of blur, transparency etc. This is true not just of Stanza’s work, but also other artists who use Director such as Danny Brown, Dextro and Lia.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. All tools and work processes (digital or otherwise) leave their mark. Perhaps it is more recognizable with Director because it seems less popular these days (at least on the web) than other tools.
