Alison Mealey: Unrealart

The concept of creating art by modding existing games has been around for a while, but Alison Mealey has created a particularly successful piece in Unrealart. She uses bots to play Unreal Tournament (a favorite with modders), where they trace out predefined paths to create complex illustrations based on photographic portraits.

20-25 bots play for up to 30 minutes, with a special Mutator mod logging the bots’ movements as well as the spots where they die. This dataset is then taken into Processing, where it is used to create an image based on a photograph. The final output is a Postscript file, (incidentally, using the SimplePostscript library I wrote ages ago). For more details on the process, read the development blog.

Unrealart will be shown at the CoEDD exhibition in Huddersfield. Link from Pixelsumo.
