<i>[...] A Week in the Life is a visualisation of telecommunications data. The data sculpture represents my movement and communication made with my cell phone in one week. With this project I want to make people aware of the german telecommunications data retention act (Vorratsdatenspeicherung) which requires the telecommunications providers to collect the connection data of all customers, which is an unneccessary breach of privacy. What can be read from the sculpture is my position in the city through the cell sites I used. The density of the cell sites reflects the speed and frequency of movement within the city. The more often I visited a place, the more cell sites were added to the map. To get the information for the data set, I wrote a software for my cell phone which recorded all the coordinates of the antennae, which I then converted to latitude and longitude. With this data I was able to create a map of Berlin. The sculpture was shown in the DAM Gallery Berlin from 08/02/05 – 08/03/08 as apart of Generator.X – Beyond the Screen and at the Toshare Festival in Torino at the Manufacturing exhibition, which was curated by Bruce Sterling.
[...] The liner notes begin with an interview of Marius Watz, curator of the Generator.x 2.0: Beyond the Screen exhibition showcasing artists working in digital fabrication (also called fabbing). My concern in putting together Generator.x 2.0 was to show that generative systems go beyond “screensavers” and purely visual abstraction. … Ultimately, digital fabrication allows for a software-based approach to physical production, meaning that computational processes can be used in all parts of the production. It’s an ironic reversal of the last decade’s transition towards the digital, for once it’s a matter of bits becoming atoms instead of the other way around. [...]

[...] His portfolio shows all of his work, although it has not been updated for quite a while - to keep up to date you will have to subscribe to his flickr photos or his Code & Form blog, where he also shares code snippets. He is also initiator of the conference, exhibition and blog Generator.X, which deals with “generative strategies and software processes in digital art, architecture and design”. Recently Watz has been experimenting with prototyping and creating generative physical models. He made a workshop about “digital fabrication and generative systems” at Club Transmediale in Berlin (again, loads of documentation on his flickr). [...]
