The Lemur OSC controller has received a considerable buzz since the first pictures appeared online. It is an impressive device, consisting of a highly responsive touch-screen that interfaces with a computer to become the ultimate flexible performance interface.

Using an interface editor the controller can be set up to simulate a number of different inputs. Traditional options are faders, buttons and even an on-screen keyboard. Less traditional are bouncing balls and other dynamic systems with gravity. The Lemur has multi-touch, so you can use as many fingers as you have available. Interface presets can be changed instantly during performance. The Lemur is a native Open Sound Control (OSC) device. It connects to the computer via a 100-baseT Ethernet cable, allowing much faster transfer of control data than MIDI.

The French company JazzMutant designed the Lemur for the current generation of laptop artists and VJ’s who use software synths and other performance software with lots of parameters. At around $2495 it’s the serious performer’s toy, but it might clear the way for cheaper dynamic controllers. And for those who like physical sliders and buttons but want lots of options, there is always the Mawzer modular controller.
