Cybernetic Serendipity: Poster

The exhibition Cybernetic Serendipity took place at the ICA in London 1968, and is largely considered the most important exhibition on early electronic art. It included early generative works, robots and all forms of cybernetic art. The list of artists included several big names, including Nam June Paik, Frieder Nake, John Whitney, John Cage and many others.

Media Art Net has the original press release and a statement by the curator Jasia Reichardt, as well as several exhibition photos. Reichardt herself has written about her experiences with the show. A historical account can be found in Brent MacGregor’s paper "Cybernetic Serendipity Revisited" (PDF) or Wayne Carlson’s chapter on Computer artists in his “A Critical History of Computer Graphics and Animation” course notes.

Interestingly, the graphic design of the original poster still rocks.
